IDC Europe is looking for a RESEARCH LEAD to drive development, articulation and the research agenda for IDC’s core European Sustainability program, within the European Sustainable Strategies and Technologies Practice. This Practice considers the sustainability credentials of IT providers, the contribution IT can make to businesses’ sustainability targets, and the ethical drivers for the technology industry in “doing good” in their communities.

This role presents an opportunity to expand IDC’s recognized thought leadership on the broad IT sustainability topic. As such, an opportunity exists to innovate and create new thinking around, for example, the impact of Circular Economy, cloud delivery impact on carbon footprint, carbon calculators software and sustainability skills within IT markets as we move towards the Digital Business Era.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead the Practice’s research agenda by:

  • Leading and growing IDC’s market-leading research into sustainability focused on the impact on IT and the role of IT and digital to enable sustainability goals.
  • Publishing thought leadership research papers on various areas of sustainability, and the technology implications for vendors and end user organizations.
  • Providing insightful and relevant comments on industry relevant events, particularly the impact of sustainability on other technology markets (IoT, cloud, AI, Managed Services, etc).
  • Working with our industry specialist teams to provide insight into the industry-specific variances in sustainability targets, challenges and activities.
  • Being the primary ‘face’ of IDC’s coverage of sustainability in Europe, presenting on sustainability topics at IDC and external events and webinars
  • Leading the delivery of market intelligence briefings.
  • Working with IDC’s worldwide sustainability team to help define taxonomies, research focus areas and market forecasts.
  • Being a trusted advisor to the Practice’s CIS clients.
  • Working with IDC’s quantitative market sizing and forecasting team and be able to lead market definition and contribute sizing and forecasting deliverables;
  • Providing quantitative analysis for end user surveys on sustainability, either as part of standard research or consulting opportunities
  • Working with the Consulting team and helping develop consulting proposals for sustainability related opportunity
  • Producing deliverables for sustainability related projects
  • Helping develop more quantitative products for the Sustainability Practice such as the Sustainability Index, expanding it to new vendor types such as Professional Services organizations, ISVs, telcos etc; or the Maturity tool.
  • Supporting marketing and business development initiatives. This is not a business development role, but supporting the marketing, sales and consulting teams by injecting topic domain knowledge or conducting webcasts is an essential part of the role.
  • The successful candidate will also be required to contribute and take ownership of custom research papers, respond to client enquires, collaborate on cross-domain research documents and support the sales and marketing teams on business development initiatives. Cross-domain research includes (but not limited to) IoT, mobility, analytics, IT services and vertical industries where sustainability issues prevail.

There will also be opportunities to raise the profile of IDC’s European Sustainability Practice through public speaking engagements and media interviews.

The position calls for a highly motivated individual who possesses outstanding writing, presentation and client interaction skills.

These capabilities will ideally have been developed at least over the past 4 years in a recognized IT and sustainability analyst or policy-maker role focused either in strategy, operations, quantitative analysis, marketing, policy formulation or ESG data governance.

The ideal candidate will come from either an analyst, consulting or media background, though candidates with industry experience will also be considered as strong contenders.

The successful candidate will be someone who can demonstrate:

  • A vision for Sustainability in the IT Industry, and beyond that to industry as a whole with IT providers as enablers of Sustainability strategies.
  • A vision for IDC’s European Sustainable Strategies and Technologies practice, in terms of its growth, structure and collaborations with other research teams within IDC.
  • A strong understanding of the role of an industry analyst, either from direct experience or as a customer of research-based products and services.
  • Proven ability to manage a team across both permanently assigned staff and members of an extended virtual community of analysts.
  • A strong commercial mindset and a desire to drive business for IDC, engaging with our professional salesforce and consulting colleagues to create opportunities and establish value propositions.
  • A deep-seated understanding of the current and future sustainability business challenges and strategies, and the understanding of the technology dynamics associated with these challenges and strategies. This knowledge will have been gained through the ongoing analysis of sustainability related industry developments, and supplemented by a growing network of contacts.
  • A relevant degree in information technology, economics or sustainability is desirable: more importantly, evidence of an interest and/or knowledge in European sustainability issues is essential, with a working knowledge of current approaches to circular economy, cloud services delivery, standards, ewaste, decarbonization, etc.

Good presentation and written communication skills are essential, and fluency in written and oral English is required: fluency in a second European language would be advantageous.
