Job Description Summary

R&D IT Data Infrastructure team of the IT Hub in Prague focuses on optimizing and improving the data infrastructure for data-driven drug discovery. We design and implement custom solutions for data acquisition, enhancement, integration, and analytics with a strong focus on semantic web technologies and linked data principles. We build domain-specific vocabularies, ontologies, and data models. We promote new industry data standards (Allotrope, FAIR) and best practices across R&D division.

We are looking for a Semantic Data Engineer who is passionate about solving problems in the intersection of information technology and life sciences. You will extend our Data Infrastructure team taking on challenges concerning ontology engineering, semantic data modeling and knowledge graph development.

Job Description and Responsibilities

The primary activities include but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to the solutions in the areas of ontology engineering, semantic data modeling and knowledge graph development.

  • Learn and apply new industry standards for scientific data management.

  • Develop proof-of-concept solutions that demonstrate feasibility and measurable improvements. Turn these prototypes into production services.

  • Maintain and document code and algorithms in appropriate repositories.

  • Deliver assigned projects from initiation to completion, including completion of tasks in a timely and cost-effective way.

  • Adhere to DevOps best practices.

  • Connect existing products and capabilities to the business needs and help identifying future opportunities, aiming to engage with the business optimally.

  • Grow your expertise, apply it, and share it with your collaborators across the company.

  • Communicate effectively, learn, innovate, and drive changes where appropriate.

  • Qualifications


  • University degree in a scientific or engineering discipline with considerable experience in semantic technologies.

  • Required Skills

  • Experience with semantic technologies, linked data and related standards.

  • Experience with ontology engineering and semantic data modeling.

  • Hands-on experience with relational, graph and RDF databases.

  • Ability to perform basic data processing tasks to manipulate/transform/merge data.

  • Fluency in a couple of languages, including but not limited to SQL, SPARQL, and English.

  • Hands-on experience with DevOps tools and culture.

  • Actionable knowledge of information technology combined with a deep interest in life sciences.

  • Self-driven personality passionate about solving problems in these domains, keen on designing and building elegant solutions, learning, experimenting, and sharing outcomes.

  • Adaptability and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the business.

  • Ability to work in international and intercultural teams.

  • Desired Skills

  • Familiarity with core biomedical ontologies.

  • Hands-on experience with a tool for ontology management.

  • Knowledge of FAIR principles for scientific data management

  • Experience with Allotrope framework.

  • Experience with SHACL language.

  • Relational data modeling (ERD).
